UPSC Score Calculator
Calculate marks with custom negative marking rules.
GS Paper 1 (2 Marks each)
CSAT Paper 2 (2.5 Marks each)
The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is widely considered one of the toughest competitive exams in the world. For an IAS aspirant, the journey begins with the Prelims, where a fraction of a mark can be the difference between qualifying for the Mains or waiting another year.
With the increasing unpredictability of the UPSC papers, calculating your score accurately against the official answer keys is vital. Our UPSC Prelims Score Calculator is specifically programmed to handle the complex 1/3rd Negative Marking logic for both General Studies (GS) and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT).
Understanding the UPSC Negative Marking System
UPSC applies a penalty for every incorrect objective-type answer. The rule is simple: one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as a penalty.
1. GS Paper 1 (General Studies)
- Total Questions: 100
- Total Marks: 200
- Marks per Correct Answer: +2.0
- Negative Marking (1/3rd): -0.66 marks per wrong answer
2. CSAT Paper 2 (Aptitude Test)
- Total Questions: 80
- Total Marks: 200
- Marks per Correct Answer: +2.5
- Negative Marking (1/3rd): -0.833 marks per wrong answer
Why is CSAT the “Silent Killer”?
In recent years, the CSAT paper has become significantly more difficult. Remember, CSAT is a qualifying paper. You must score at least 33.33% (66.67 marks) to pass. If you fail to qualify for CSAT, your GS Paper 1 marks will not even be evaluated, regardless of how high they are.
How to Calculate Your UPSC Score Manually
If you prefer to verify your marks manually using the UPSC official answer key, use the following steps:
Step 1: Count your attempts
List down your total number of correct and incorrect responses for both papers.
Step 2: Apply the Formula for GS Paper 1
In GS Paper 1, each question carries 2 marks, and there is a negative marking of 0.66 for every wrong answer.
- Formula: Total Score = (Correct Answers x 2) – (Wrong Answers x 0.66)
- Example: If you got 60 correct and 21 wrong: (60 x 2) – (21 x 0.66) = 120 – 13.86 = 106.14
Step 3: Apply the Formula for CSAT Paper 2
In the CSAT paper, each question carries 2.5 marks, and there is a negative marking of 0.833 for every wrong answer.
- Formula: Total Score = (Correct Answers x 2.5) – (Wrong Answers x 0.833)
- Example: If you got 40 correct and 12 wrong: (40 x 2.5) – (12 x 0.833) = 100 – 9.99 = 90.01 (Qualified!)

The “Safe Score” and Cutoff Trends
Analysing previous years’ UPSC Prelims cutoffs helps in setting a target. For the General Category, the cutoff has seen a downward trend due to the increasing difficulty level:
- 2023: 75.41
- 2024: 88.00 (Estimated)
- 2025: 85-92 (Projected)
The 2026 Outlook:
With the 2026 Prelims expected to maintain a high level of conceptual depth, a “Safe Score” in GS Paper 1 is generally considered to be 95+. If our calculator shows your score in this range, you should begin your Mains Answer Writing practice without wasting a single day.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Does UPSC have negative marking for unattempted questions?
No. There is no penalty for leaving a question blank. Negative marking only applies to incorrect answers.
What happens if I mark two options for the same question?
If you mark more than one option, it will be treated as a wrong answer, even if one of the options you marked is correct. The 1/3rd penalty will be applied.
Is the cutoff different for GS and CSAT?
The cutoff is only for GS Paper 1. CSAT (Paper 2) has a fixed qualifying mark of 66.67. Your rank in the Prelims list is determined solely by your GS score, provided you pass CSAT.
How accurate is this calculator?
Our calculator uses high-precision floating-point math to ensure the 0.66 and 0.833 deductions are as accurate as the official UPSC evaluation software.
Can I use this for State PSC exams?
Yes. By using the Negative Marking Ratio dropdown, you can adjust the penalty to 1/4th (0.25) or 1/2 (0.50) to match the rules of various State Public Service Commissions.
