Mumbai University CGPA to Percentage

MU Official Formula

MU CGPA Converter

Convert your MU 10-point CGPA to Percentage.

The University of Mumbai (MU) utilises a 10-point grading system known as the CBCGS (Choice Based Credit, Grading and Semester System). While this “Pointer” system is excellent for academic evaluation, it creates a practical problem: most companies, foreign universities, and government portals require your scores in a percentage format.

The Official Conversion Formula

Percentage = (CGPA multiplied by 7.1) plus 11

This formula applies to almost all streams, including Arts, Science, Commerce, and Engineering, under the 10-point scale.

How to Calculate Your Percentage Manually

If you don’t have access to the calculator, you can follow these three simple steps:

  1. Multiply your CGPA by 7.1: This is the primary multiplier used by the university.
  2. Add 11 to the product: This constant is added to align the credit system with traditional marks.
  3. Round off to two decimals: This is the standard practice for academic documentation.

Example:

If your pointer is 8.40:

  • Calculation: (8.40 x 7.1) + 11
  • Step 1: 8.40 x 7.1 = 59.64
  • Step 2: 59.64 + 11 = 70.64
  • Result: 70.64%

Important Considerations for Students

1. CGPA vs. SGPI

Many students confuse their SGPI (Semester Grade Performance Index) with their CGPA.

  • SGPI is for one specific semester.
  • CGPA is the average of all semesters. For your final degree percentage (like for TCS or Infosys placements), always use the CGPA mentioned in your final semester marksheet.

2. The Engineering Stream

For Engineering students, the (CGPA x 7.1) + 11 formula is nearly universal. However, older batches (pre-CBCGS) may have used a different 7-point scale. If your marksheet is out of 7, this calculator does not apply to you.

3. Why the +11 constant?

Mumbai University’s grading curve is historically conservative. The addition of the +11 constant ensures that MU students are not at a disadvantage when applying for jobs alongside students from boards like CBSE, where percentages are naturally higher.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does Mumbai University provide the percentage on the degree certificate?

No. Typically, the university only mentions the CGPA and the final Grade (O, A, B, etc.). You must use the official ordinance formula for manual conversion in forms.

Can I use this formula for IDOL (Distance Learning)?

Yes, students of the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) follow the same 10-point conversion formula.

What is the minimum CGPA required for First Class?

In MU, a percentage of 60% is usually the benchmark for First Class. Using the formula, this equates to roughly a 6.91 CGPA.

Is there a different formula for Arts or Commerce?

While some specific autonomous colleges under MU might have slight variations, the (CGPA x 7.1) + 11 formula is the standard university ordinance for regular 10-point marksheets.
