CGPA to Percentage

Convert your 10-point CGPA instantly.

For students under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the transition from numerical marks to a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) was designed to reduce academic pressure. However, most entrance forms and higher education institutions still require your scores in a percentage format.

Why does CBSE use the 9.5 Multiplier?

A common question among students is why we multiply CGPA by 9.5 instead of 10. CBSE arrived at this number after analysing board results over five years. They found that students who scored an A1 grade (10 grade points) averaged approximately 95% in their actual marks. Dividing this average (95) by the grade point (10) resulted in the multiplier 9.5.

How to Calculate CBSE CGPA to Percentage

If you only have your individual subject grade points, follow these three steps to find your overall percentage:

  1. Add Grade Points: Sum the grade points of your top 5 main subjects.
  2. Calculate CGPA: Divide that total sum by 5.
  3. Find Percentage: Multiply your CGPA by 9.5.

Example Calculation:

If a student scores the following grade points:

  • Maths: 9.0
  • Science: 8.5
  • English: 9.2
  • Social Science: 8.8
  • Hindi: 9.5

Total Sum: 45.0

CGPA: 45.0 / 5 = 9.0

Percentage: 9.0 x 9.5 = 85.5%

Converting CGPA to Marks (Out of 500)

To find your equivalent marks out of a total of 500, use this simple two-step logic:

  1. Convert CGPA to Percentage (CGPA × 9.5).
  2. Multiply the resulting percentage by 5.

Example: For a 7.6 CGPA, the percentage is 72.2% (7.6 x 9.5). The equivalent marks would be 361 out of 500 (72.2% of 500).
